5 Key Markers: Get a Clear Picture of Your Anemia Risk

A protein that stores iron in your body. Low levels of ferritin can indicate a lack of iron, which is a common cause of anemia.

Vitamin B12

Vitamin B12 is essential for the production of red blood cells and a deficiency can cause anemia. Those who follow a vegetarian or vegan diet may be at higher risk for B12 deficiency.

Folate (Vitamin B9)

A B vitamin that is necessary for the production of red blood cells. Low levels of folate can lead to anemia. It is also important for pregnant women, as a deficiency can lead to birth defects.

High levels of homocysteine in the blood can indicate a deficiency in folate, vitamin B12, or vitamin B6. These deficiencies can lead to anemia.

Hematocrit measures the percentage of red blood cells in your blood. Low hematocrit levels can indicate anemia, while high levels can indicate other health conditions.
